What if Microsoft shutdown Skype?

So, have you asked yourself what if Skype shuts down one day. I mean, Skype has been my preferred alternative messenger as compared to many others out there due to its IP Telecommunication capability that cuts down overseas cost by much. Even in corporate environment, we have seen Skype being widely used across the globe. Just like how Yahoo shifted it’s business focus elsewhere leaving Geocities in the dark ending its services literally right after that [Wiki Here]. So what will happen to Skype when Microsoft decided to head for “One Microsoft” [Link Here] theme – an internal corporate message that has been officially distributed across Microsoft business departments recently.

Skype was Microsoft’s biggest acquisition in the company’s history yet it was only giving Microsoft only 8% revenue out of totaly Microsoft business. While Microsoft has other messaging services existing before their Skype purchase such as Windows Live Messenger and Microsoft Lync, Microsoft so far have not fully reaping from its purchase of Skype.

Microsoft have not made those billion dollar purchase since Bill Gates and we are left to ponder what will happen to Skype when Microsoft fully attain “One Microsoft” in operation under the lead of their current CEO, Steve Ballmer. Will we see the same fate of Yahoo’s Geocities, Lycos Tripod / Angelfire and many other somewhat free yet widely use software service down the drain?

Only time will tell …
