I was amused by what is happening at Hardwarezone’s EDWM Forum. For those who have not known about that forum, Hardwarezone (HWZ) EDMW (Eat-Drink-Man-Woman) is a forum which is managed by SPH Magazine Pte Ltd where i believe most of it’s forum moderators are volunteers and it is a community based forum. So i saw this thread titled “i am very happy that mod/admin finally do something about writing in Mandarin” – i mean come on, of course i will be happy to see that because i am not Chinese, i don’t understand mandarin and it is always nice to have a place where it is on a universal language (though there will be some people would argue how common is Chinese language etc).

How it probably began …

I scouted around the forum down to several pages and i noticed a significant amount of thread starters complaining about a pinoy moderator banning Chinese characters or language in the forum. So that spiral out from a single thread to multiple threads then to topics about Malay language should be ban and so on. If you are ever interested to see the progress of this – which i believe it will be going on for sometime knowing some of the forum members there being petty and ‘boh liao’, you will be surprise how things can be blown out of proportion – you can head down to the [Link Here].

So here is my point of view …

HardwareZone forums has been by default started out as an English (With some exceptional commonly understood Singlish) writing community. If you ever wish to write in your own form of language then with all the respect find a forum that speaks your own language be it Chinese, Malay, Tamil, Tagalog, etc. Persisting in writing your own language just show the foul manners you have when the community are generally engaged in a common language which in this case is ENGLISH. Being a Singaporean and in Singapore where you see enough of Chinese Mandarin sign boards and public announcements in that language (which i honestly find still okay since majority are Chinese), it is nice to have a common place online where people actually converse in common language you understand which is in MANY CASE is ENGLISH. So i dont really get why the fuss over such petty issue (since we all know it is an English written forum), why the need to get agitated when the moderators are just doing their job in keeping the forum neutral as it is suppose to be! I mean come on, as Singaporean, even during our elementary school days, we are taught English, English is a requirement for you to graduate and so forth. We all have identity but if you look at the basic foundation of our prosperity where it matters, English language has help to close the gap of communication between races and nationals that helped us to strive better than any of our neighbouring countries.

I need not to go on further and hope those words would put some thoughts to the petty and ‘boh liao‘ people in the forum. Cheers!
