Firstly, if you been reading the internet rumours, Facebook is NOT shutting down on 15th May 2013 – at least no RELIABLE online source have actually posted that. To back this up, a source have been constantly monitoring such hoax, you can visit them here.

The spread of such hoax

Weekly World News is one of the catalysts behind these rumors, and they continue to change the dates several times a year. Note that this is the same source for such ridiculous stories as “bat boy” and photos of presidents dining with aliens. Last year we cited an article at the following address:

http://weeklyworldnews.com/headlines/27321/facebook-will-end-on-july-15th/

This article no longer exists and now forwards to:

http://weeklyworldnews.com/headlines/27321/facebook-will-end-on-ma-15th/

This is the exact same article we cited last year, but with the date in the article now changed to May 15, 2013.

Some Facebook posts include the following official-looking news report, which quotes the phony Weekly World News story:

PALO ALTO CA – Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook will be shut down in March. Managing the site has become too stressful. “Facebook has gotten out of control,” said Zuckerberg in a press conference outside his Palo Alto office, “and the stress of managing this company has ruined my life. I need to put an end to all the madness.” Zuckerberg went on to explain that starting May 15th, users will no longer be able to access their Facebook accounts.

Another variant reads:

PALO ALTO, CA –Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook will be shut down in May of 2013. Managing the site has become too stressful.

Will Facebook Go Bust?

It depends where you see it. Data is the new oil in the market and with Facebook’s massive user pool, i see it as less likely to go bust anytime soon. Just take it this way, what was one thinking launching a search engine called “Google” back in the 90s, seeing it as least likely to be a threat to technology giants but hey, less than a decade later, look at how that search engine company evolved itself to be one of the internet’s most biggest and innovative company around – have you even thought of that?

Advertorial: Eyeota.com is currently seeking for developers in Singapore – they deal with big data and if you think you are cut for it, check out their careers page here.

So, if you are receiving such rumours, just take it that Weekly World News is needing a cheap publicity stunt to gain the awareness. Seems to be working for them though since they even put the effort to keep such hoax coming :)

cheers!
